I too was an electronics tech for many years. I'm also a cheapskate ....on many things, but on some things I go quality on, In this case you can do both if you want to do the work yourself. I have found no manufacturers of these harnesses that I would call junk .....yet.

If I were to search out a solution in between doing it yourself with a generic harness and the M&H options, I'd look hard at Painless and American Autowire. They both claim to have a "custom" harness made specifically for Chevelles, or more muscle car generic. It's been a while since I looked at what they had though, so memory is faint here. I may have a catalog from this last show. But their web sites should show you everything you need to know.

I bought a generic 21 circuit harness that is made for a GM column and it looks pretty sweet. I picked it up at a show with a show special price of $165 and included the dimmer switch. I bought it from a company most of us never heard of, because they mostly go to street rodder shows. Their web site totally sucks, but I know they know what they are doing as they held teaching seminars on wiring your car and troubleshooting electrical problems. They even make their own starter and alternators. Some are with a chrome case. The tech guy even offered to take calls anytime if you have a problem. Another case of a good company not knowing how important the web can be, but they are trying. Check this out if you're even remotely intersted in a "generic" http://haywireinc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HI&Product_Code=E_SERIESD&Category_Code=WH  Ignore the last sentence as I think it's a mistake for this page. They copied off another similar one and forgot to change the wording.

Here's another one that I think is a good option for a "generic" http://www.ezwiring.com/  Check out the 21 circuit.

Man since I half way know what I'm doing on wiring, I am Sooooooo looking forward to getting to the point where I can start wiring. I am struggling through this body work stuff, but learning as I go. So I don't want to rush that part and I think it will be one heck of a lot more enjoyable than body work!

Thanks to everyone for their comments on the harness. So far, I've checked with NPD, Paddock, Lectric Limited, OPG, M&H, Year One and Harmon's. The pricing is very similar for the most part. I wonder who is actually making the harnesses for some of these companies... If the harness is the same, I would prefer to go to the cheap guys.

Which leads me to my next question, which is who on the list above gives discounts to ACES and Team Chevelle members? Best discounts?

...and Steve, thanks for your thought out reply. In my earlier life, I was an electronics technician so creating a harness or soldering doesn't bother me, but time is a big factor. I wish I could get a complete harness for under $500 somewhere.

When I bought the car, it came with a couple of harnesses, but I threw them out, subscribing to the theory that if you're going to do a ground up restoration, you should replace the harness. You don't want the car to burn to the ground because of a short or something... but man, if I knew it would be $800+, I might have looked at the old harness just a bit closer, LOL.

Thanks,
Larry

I have to agree with Clint, I bought/ordered everything from M&H either thru the website or calling and talking to  Ken Petty at M&H [EMAIL PROTECTED]                       All the harness were top of the line and everything fit together as designed, absolutely no problems..... They are sometimes out of stock and have to make them up, so if you use M&H, give some lead time.. I had to wait a couple of weeks to get the dash harness with gauges, but considering the quality it was worth the wait..

M&H Electric is where I would go to buy new harnesses.

In a month or so, I will be in the market for a wiring harness for my 66 SS396. Who would you recommend I go to to buy one? I need a complete harness from headlights to tail lights. I've looked in a couple of places, and I'm starting to see it adds up in a hurry.

Any suggestions would be appreciated... John Nasta, you do wiring?

Thanks,
