Jimmy,
On my '69 the steering column has a feature that requires you to put the shifter into reverse before you can remove the key. This locks the car in reverse for theft protection. I'm not sure if they kept that feature up to '72, (My '71 was an auto). But that might be all it is. So if you still have the auto column, you won't have all the fun parts to make it work anyway.

I am swapping out an automatic for a muncie m-21 in my 72 malibu. I bought a manual conversion kit from "Ground-Up" Z-bar peddles etc..and installed it all.(thought that was it) put a hurst super comp shifter and linkage on the tranny and on the instruction sheet I see a partial picture of a back drive rod conected to bottom of the reverse arm, so I go to the assembly manual and see ther is more to it. do I have to or  should I get and install, back drive(reverse lockout) linkage. any advice is appreciated !
