As noted, it’s been discussed on TC several times and consensus (plus looking at a lot of 66/67 Chevelles) is that this is not indicative of a SS or Malibu – regardless of the number.  Each number has been found numerous times on the ‘other’ model.  I don’t think anyone knows for sure but some thoughts have been it’s a die number from a particular supplier.  Could be it’s was originally intended to be different for Malibu and SS due to the different emblem mounting locations but found not necessary and the dies were just never changed.  Then again, maybe something else entirely. :*)

Unfortunately most of us, me included, get wrapped up in Malibu vs. SS and I’ve honestly never checked other models.  Maybe some 66/67 300/300 Deluxe owners could check their trunk areas and let us know if anything is stamped there…133xx, 134xx, 136xx, etc.

Bill,

The TC forum members may be right, but I can't imagine Chevrolet going through the time and expense to stamp these numbers into every single quarter panel made if it didn't serve a purpose. It's certainly not life or death for me if I don't get to the bottom of this, but I was just curious...

It's just a number--has nothing to do with whether it's a SS or Malibu or even the part #.  There was a thread on TC about this a while back.

Looking at my 66 Chevelle from the back, with the trunk lid out of the way, in the top left and top right corners of the trunk opening, there is a number stamped into the sheetmetal, right next to where the trunk seal would go...

Is this a partial VIN stamp, or is it just the fender part number? Anybody know the secret?

You can see what I'm talking about here...
