Most thinking gun owners have a "throwaway", just in case the need were to arise, especially at home. I know I do.

I think convincing a jury that your vehicle is family, would be a hard sell. Not saying I dont agree that anyone who is willing to steal something from a person isnt asking for it, just that from a legal viewpoint, it might not work that way.

firearm to stop incidents on my property,twice. I'm a pretty nice guy until
  certain lines are crossed but all bets are off after that.
If more people in this country were armed and recognizant of their rights,we
