This topic came up on this list before.  Whether or not a Japanese Car made on American soil is Japanese or American?  Of course, this is a subjective question.  Out of my own curiosity, I asked one of the economists that work with me (very knowledgeable) his opinion.  He brought up an interesting fact that I thought I'd share.

GDP or Gross Domestic Product is quoted in the news often as a statistic that shows the size and strength of the US economy and is often quoted as a percentage growth statistic (for example, GDP growth of 3.6%, etc.).  It is a fact that these Japanese Cars & Trucks built around the US are considered in this statistic to be a Domestic Product.  There are probably several reasons for this, but most notably they are built with American labor on American soil. 

Now, I don't think this answers the question, but it's something to chew on.
