When I was in high school I had a 53 Stude with a 389 Pontiac w/ tri-power and isky cam. It sounded "BAD", then one night I raised the hood and it looked like a xmas tree around the wires. They were too close. I adjusted the wires and the idle didn't sound "BAD" anymore. Smoothed right out. That was in 1964 and I raced at Fremont and went 13.70 and 105. Those were the days. I sent the car to the junk yard.

Here's a tip. Be sure to open your hood in the dark every once in a while. It's a great way to see if any of your ignition wires are arcing.
