I'm glad this topic came up.
I have a 71 SS 454 car that came with a dual snorkel air cleaner.
It is not a cowl induction hooded car but a legit SS 454 car.
One reliable source thought the air cleaner was the original.
Could any of you check your build sheets for a 71 SS 454 (Z15) without the ZL2 option.

This much I know.
The air cleaner box on my build sheet is coded CL.
There is a date stamped in the inside of the air cleaner in  green ink dated 8/11/70.
Schedule no. date is 02-23 from build sheet.
Car built at Leed's plant
I have never seen another one.

Build sheet information from others I can't validate:
1970 dual snorkel = CO code  (believed to be around 200 built, LS6 non cowl induction)
1970 w/ cowl induction/ single snorkel open top = DG code
1970 open element = SS code
1971 w / cowl induction = KN code (did find one 71 SS 454 car w / cowl induction hood coded DH).

Rumor only,
The dual snorkel air cleaners were too noisy and were changed to single snorkel later in the production run.

Also if you have a copy of the 1971 Assembly manual from GM look at the page that shows the over view of the LS5 motor.
Sheet 1, UPC LS5 clearly shows a dual snorkel air cleaner (no ZL2).

Sheet 1, UPC LS3 shows an enclosed single snorkel air cleaner.

Could you please pull out those build sheets and check that info in the air cleaner box.

Dale,
Do you have a data base of build sheets?
I thought someone did.

Thanks,
Bob Belz

According to some photos I have of two supposed survivors, snorkel with 454; don’t have photos of a 39/402 though.  Cowl induction got the open style cleaner with the 454.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Correct Air Cleaner

Can anybody tell me what the correct air cleaner for a 1971 Chevelle SS with a big block engine.  The car does not have cowl induction, but it does have a domed hood.  Do you use an open element or a snorkel air cleaner?  I am just trying to help a friend who is resroring a 71 Chevelle.  Thanks  Denny
