A 15x8 wheel with 4" backspace will not be centered in the wheelwell. Anything larger than a 235 tire will most likely rub. If the wheel had 4.5" backspace, you could easily run a 275 tire. Still want 4" backspace?

- What about the thickness of the center part? Wouldnt you want it centered over that, and assuming so, wouldnt the backspace be 4.5 minus half the thickness of the inner elements that touch the outer rim? Maybe that's why people go w/ 4" instead of 4.5". Just guessing.

- You want to try to center the tire & wheel combo you're using, in the wheelwell. A common size used on A-bodies is a 15x8 wheel. An 8" wheel is actually closer to 9" wide, measured from outer lip to outer lip. Half of 9" is 4.5". So,zero offset on an 8" is actually 4.5" backspace, not 4". Offset is a little harder term to understand than backspacing as the latter is pretty much self-explanatory.
