I don't know the size off the top of my head, but if I remember right, in
general it's two wire sizes smaller than the wire it's protecting. So if
it's an 18 gauge wire, you want a 22 gauge fusible link. You do want a
special fusible link and not regular wire. Bigger numbers = smaller
diameter wire.

Also, another option now is Maxi-fuses. Mount it where you can get to it,
and if it ever goes, you just plop a new one in. Saves you from cussing on
a lonely right at night because you have to drop the starter and try to
make a new connection.

The shunt on an ammeter allows only a small sample current to flow through
the ammeter, rather than the full output of charge coming from the
alternator into the battery and circuits. If you have an alternator greater
than 60 amps you do NOT want that much current coming through those wires.
