You don't go by the width of the crush sleeve. You need to go by the
preload on the pinion which is measured in inch pounds, so you need the tool to
do so. If I recall correctly, the correct number is 20-24 inch
pounds. Don't worry about stripping the pinion nut, that won't
happen.
