Dan,

Unfortunately for me, the Currie rear is the only thing on my El I think I did right the first time around!  Let's see, over the past 9 years (wow, I didn't realize I've had it that long!) it's had 4 sets of wheels/tires, 2 sets of headers, 2 engines, 2 transmissions, 4 radiators, 3 different brake systems, 2 gas tanks (a 3rd is coming), 3 sets of seats, jeez, I could have built a couple of cars!  The list goes on as I'm sure it does for a lot of folks!  The one nice thing is I've learned a lot about what I want and don't want so I hope the next car doesn't have to go through as much trial and error and maybe I can spend less money!

One important thing I should point out... whenever I tried to cut corners to save some money, I ended up doing whatever it was more than once until I ended up getting what I really wanted in the first place.  My wife finally stepped in and told me to get the good part(s) the first time around to save myself from spending money on the cheaper/lesser items, and then later spending more money on the good stuff on the second (or third) go-round!  Lucky for me she didn't wait until the car was done to say something! : )

Herb,

If I had to do it over I would have gone with the 9”. Live and learn. Considering all the wasted money and pain in the rear problems I had, $3600 would have saved me a lot of pain and strain!!(GRIN) I just new I could find a cheap one in a junk yard! WRONG!

Hi Dan,

When I got to the point of replacing the 10 bolt in my El, I called Currie because I wanted a 9" in my car ever since my first car ('70 Torino) because it had one.  Anyway, when I called Currie I figured the rear would cost about $2500 but by the time I hung up the phone I spent $3600 ($360 was for S&H).  It came fully equipped with 31 spline Curry forged alloy axles, Strange nodular iron 3rd member, billet aluminum pinion support, 3:70 gears, Detroit True Trac, Explorer disc brakes, inspection cap, drain plug, billet 1350 yoke, and black powder coat.  The only mistake I think I made was not getting the Baer brakes in place of the Explorers because I ended up selling the Explorers when I gave in and ordered Baers.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that rear was probably one of the best things I bought for my car.  Other than an axle seal leak (Currie sent me a new bearing and seal free) it's been a flawless performer.  Sometimes I forget it's in there until I get under the car to do some cleaning then I see it and go "Oh yeah, it's got a 9".  : )

I can say for sure, if the next project needs a new rear, it'll be a new unit, either 12 bolt or 9".

When I bought my 72 Chevelle, it was supposed to have a 12 bolt posi. Well….it had a ten bolt non-posi! I thought..no problem, there should be plenty laying around, and we have so many junk yards in the Houston area. Well, after much searching online, not to mention a gazillion phone calls, I found one on a 71 Chevelle that was hit in the front. They took it out…It was a 12 bolt and cost me $500. I was so happy my search was over. I got it to the shop the next day and we took the cover off, it was total CRAP inside. The case was good, that ‘s all. Well a call to Summit, and a new Eaton posi, Richmond 3:73 gears, Superior axles, a new aluminum cover, bearing and extras, plus I got the housing Powder coated! Life was good, but by the time I added all the money spent. I would have been fairly close to buying one from Currie, Moser or Strange!

Then the following year and an incentive check, I came up the bright idea to add Global West CAT 5 Suspension with Wilwood 4 piston calipers and zinc washed rotors, so…I ended having the ends chopped off, new ends welded on and bearings to eliminate the C clip. Oh don’t let me forget, the new Moser Axles…plus the rear had to be sand blasted and re-powder coated again…..Yep..I could had a nice Moser unit like Clint, with a hell of lot less headaches. Poor planning on my part!

Learn from my mistakes! I also run a bored out 454 with an 8-71 blower. It has a nice heavy lope and does turn heads when I go to Houston.

Thanks Clint, as usual. I'm working a 12 bolt for my 69 elky that will be holding up to some major hp on the blown 454 I'm putting together. You just gave the most succinct, clear summary of a rear-end build I've seen--and I've been looking around.

It's been said before, and often, that this list is awesome. Thanks to all of you guys who really help our builds come together.

I won't be making it to this year's CB, but hopefully in the not-too-distant future. If any of you come up near Oregon, let me know.

BTW, Dick & Linda Brandt @ True Connections are class acts and terrific people. No need to doubt them if you haven't done business with them before.
