I looked up the casting # and date last
night . it was #361959 made from 1973-1990, date code D-11-78 (April ,11, 1978).
I checked both 1st &3rd journals and #3 & #5 rod caps. no discoloration
very slight scratch on 3rd journal bearing other wise they seem to be fine. I
oiled the bolt threads and under the bolt head and torqued the mains to 105
ft.lbs and rod caps to 50 ft.lbs in 10 ft.lbs incriments until ten lbs before
final torque value, then I went in 5 ft.lbs to the final numbers. witch still
leaves me wondering where the small silver(chrome looking )flakes in the oil pan
came from ? thank you to all that replied.

ps. to anyone in the North east, Muscle car Madness is today at Raceway
Park,Englishtown,N.J. I am going there now :O) thanks
again.

You can call the local engine shop with your block numbers to
find out witch engine you have, better to be safe than sorry later down the
road. I run a 454 bigblock and they are great but they need careful bottom end
work. Goodluck Eddie 66ss conv.

Wouldn't

The 454 didn't appear
until 1970.
I would say you should go with the 105 torque
number.

I have IV
Generation 454ci with a 2 bolt main. I'm going to pull the main caps to
check the bearings. the chiltons says to torque them to 105ft.lbs then it
has a foot note that if its a 1966-67 4 bolt its 115ftlbs, 1966-68 , 2
bolt-95 ftlbs. I am not sure what year the motor is, would it be safe to
assume my motors main caps should be torqued to 105 ft lbs ? Jimmy
