Clint, here are Hagerty's underwriting guidelines on Exotics. Looks like
they were unaware your regular use vehicles were 3+ years
old until they received your application.
 
Different companies have different underwriting so its best to
go thru an agent that is familiar with each companies underwriting.
Even then, things happen and applications get rejected.
 
Case-in-point: Hagerty has a new endorsement excluding
racing and they say they will write these cars and cover
them while in the pits but exclude coverage while in the
staging lanes or while actually on the track surface.
 
So, I have a customer with a 69 Mustang, big-tire, back-halved, 521CID
BBF, full roll cage with a fogger and plate nitrous systems. I write
the application, photos of engine compartment complete with
nitrous systems, trunk with fuel cell and nitrous bottles, interior
with sheet metal and roll cage and Hagerty sends it back
stating its a little too racey. Anyway, I contact one of my
other classic carriers and they accept it without blinking an eye.
Less then a week after submission I get an approval and binder
and a week later I get the policy. The price is less then
Hagerty and everybody is happy.

Because we only sell Agreed Value policies, our program is designed to insure vehicles in very good to excellent condition that are either maintaining or increasing in value. It is the agent's responsibility to only submit applicants that demonstrate that he or she cares for the vehicle in a manner consistent with the ownership of something valuable. This means that the vehicle must be garaged when not in use, is driven for pleasure, shows, or club driving, and is not used for daily or back-up transportation.

Exotics

Exotic vehicles stand on their own as collectible cars because of their extremely limited production. By this we mean the car’s limited production is a major factor in determining if it qualifies for our program. Hagerty defines exotic cars as vehicles 19 years old or newer that have production numbers of less than 3,000 per year.

Guidelines for Writing Exotic Vehicles:

  • Four color photographs of vehicles must be reviewed prior to issuing coverage
  • Annual mileage should not exceed 2,500 miles per year
  • Vehicle’s minimum insured value must be $40,000
  • Regular use cars must be less than three years old
  • Odometer reading should not be excessive in relationship to the years owned or age of the vehicle
  • We can not write Exotic vehicles in Massachusetts and North Carolina

Back in 2002,I talked to Hagerty about insuring my 1991 ZR-1 Corvette. Not your average ZR-1 but a Callaway Aerobody Supernatural conversion,#19 of only 19 built. After numerous phone conversations,I thought coverage had been secured but they refused the deal. Probably what you're thinking is that the Callaway was too high of a risk or something to that effect. No,the reason they refused to cover the car was because My Daily Driver Was Two Years Too Old! That car was a 1997 model. They wasted a week of my time and theirs,only to come up with that crock. What did I do? Politely thanked them and called JC Sneed Co. In two hours,I had a better policy at a cheaper rate.
Just so you don't think that was an isolated incident with Hagerty,let me give you a little background info. Since 1996,I've been Director of three large organizations with total memberships of over 10K. Adequate insurance coverage is a necessary evil for owners of any collectible vehicle. After my experience,I talked to many,many people that had similar experiences to share about Hagerty. Mine was not an isolated incident by any stretch of the imagination.
Sorry for being so long-winded. I'm sure others have had good experiences with that company.
Me,I wouldn't piss on Hagerty if they were on fire.

No offense to anyone using them but IMO, Hagerty sucks. They would be the last company I would ever deal with again.

Well than I'll give him a call.  When I used Hagertys they would not sell direct.  I had to go thru an agent in the DFW area.   It was a Hagerty policy and Hagerty billed me, but I had to go thru the middle man to buy the policy and pay their commission.
