I was born in 73. I'm not sure "when they were popular". I remember them when I was a kid in Kentucky. I'm guessing that they were popular long before I ever came across it.  When I moved from KY to Baltimore, I had quite a culture shock! LOL. The name refers to the old metal lidded oil cans that would do the same thing when you squeezed the sides. Does anyone remember the old oil cans that you had to have a spout for?
