Sorry, I should clarify - Once you disconnect the negative battery cable, put one meter lead on the neg. cable and the other on the neg. battery post.

If you don't have a meter, you should be able to use a test light as well..

Tabius,

Since you already have a new battery, the first thing I would do is put a volt meter across the battery with the car running. You should get 13.5 volts DC or a bit better if the alternator circuit is charging.

If the charging system seems to be working, you will have to figure out where the load is. If you disconnect the negative lead off the battery and put an amp meter across it with key off, you will be able to see the current draw. Now you an start unplugging fuses to get a good idea where the problem is. When you pull the right fuse, the current draw should go to virtually nothing unless you have a computer, radio, etc that draws a small amount of current.

Good luck,
Larry Shouse

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Power Problem?

I have a 71 Chevelle SS 402 and last week went out to start my car and the battery was dead. Being that the battery was fairly old, i just opted for a new battery. After the new battery, the car cranked fine for 2 days but again the battery was dead. No lights are being left on so I'm wondering where this draw is coming from. Could it be a bad alternator or maybe, just maybe the trunk light not going off?

Thanks,

Tabius
