Hopefully it is just an exhaust leak. Something to look at definitely. I dont remember seeing any metal shavings in my oil. Its a good measure to look at it...cut open the oil filter and see what it shows. I'd still pop the valve covers off and measure the lashing. Good luck, let us know what you find out.
