Jimmy,
     Basically you want 12V(crank and run) into the HEI Coil.  I run a 
ground from the coil as well.
     The closed chamber heads obviously increase compression.  The open 
chamber in general seem to be slightly more friendly to the environment 
but truth is neither were overly efficient in design.  I like the open 
over the closed because they tend to flow better stock and do well with 
mods.  I am only discussing Oval ports here.  They are great.  781 049 
are choice pieces.  I can't remember the casting maybe 292 off of 71-72 
chevelles but they aren't bad either.
