Regarding the heads, what I was taught was that a closed chamber will build
compression better, but at the sacrifice of flow, because the small chamber
shrouds the valves. Open chambers on otherwise equivalent heads will flow
better but are harder to build compression with, requiring more dome on the
piston. I may be mistaken but I don’t believe I’ve seen a set of
aftermarket heads with closed chambers, at least not modern production
units.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] HEI conversion / heads

First,I was wondering if any one can explain how to convvert from a old
style points distributer to HEI ? or suggest a link. Secondly, I was
wondering what the advanteges or differences between open and closed chamber
heads. Tomorrow I am going to look through old parts that have been sitting
in a barn for the last 10 years and there are a set of BBC closed chamber
heads that are bare among other misc. parts. don't know anything about them,
but I am going to get the casting #'s off them, but would like to know what
you guys think. Jimmy C.
