The best deal for packages under 1 pound is USPS Priority Mail at
$4.60 to anywhere in the U.S. in 2-3 business days. However, for the
shipper it is often less convenient to ship USPS. That rate does not
include tracking or the automatic $100 insurance that you get w/
UPS/FedEx, and it often requires sending somebody to stand in line at
the post office, and of course an employee's time costs money"

John I know that the PO now has carrier pickup & you can buy & print the
postage online. I haven't used it myself so it may not be as convenient as
the commercials & my carrier says it is. www.usps.com

But no matter who you are buying from/shipping with, it stinks to pay
more for shipping & handling than the item cost you. I almost always wait
to consolidate my order OR go looking for more to buy to make it
worthwhile.
