I left out the best part in my last email---it looks like it came from a
corvette!!!

I attached copies of pages from an old parts manual, there is an example of
the number on the second page. It looks to me like you have a 55 or 56 265
powerglide engine made in filint.

IIRC the single-letter suffix was in use up until the early 1960s.  Does
the engine have an oil filter?  According to nastyz28.com "F" could be a
1955 265 or 1957 283 and the early 265s didn't come with one.  I don't
recognize the format of the rest of the number.
