Harlan:

I had a 56 Chevy sedan delivery with a factory 265. It too had no filter.
Unfortunately this was when I was 16 years old and didn't know boo about ID
numbers etc.I do know it was the original motor I'm guessing mine must of been
an early 1956 production  and they used the non filtered blocks until they
either got all used up or they used them in the cheaper cars?

Maybe yours is a replacement block? I do not believe that it was possible to
"add" a filter to the area in question.I can tell you when I went to change the
oil I searched all over for an oil filter.Mine didnt have one but the add on
filter was on top of the manifold . it was helf in place under the thermostat
housing and the metal lines screwed into the front of the block near the top.
The motor is probably worth something to someone restoring a certain year car
.Send me a picture of the numbers too and I will do some research.

IIRC the single-letter suffix was in use up until the early 1960s.  Does
the engine have an oil filter?  According to nastyz28.com "F" could be a
1955 265 or 1957 283 and the early 265s didn't come with one.  I don't
recognize the format of the rest of the number.

the engine has a large cannister type filter on the drivers side, (is this
possible it could have been added on?- or only if it was mounted on top of the
engine ?)and also it is mated to a 3- speed manual--
so what is the final thoughts on this deal?
it was ruled out that it is not a corvette engine -- correct?
i don;t really plan to keep this engine in this car, it turns over maybe like
1/4 of a turn back and forth by hand- ( a little tough as it does not have a
center crank bolt) and the same with the starter-- i was not wanting just to
take it in for scrap if it might be something that someone would want to have--
is this worth anything above scrap value?

Thanks for the replys , and i will try and get a picture for you Dale--
