Dear Mr. Rodriguez: Thank you for sending this information. However before signing on to an endorsement letter we must first see a copy of this bill. We must be careful since the TYRANTS that are responsible for these GESTAPO TYPE RAIDS have no respect for human rights. And could INFESTATE this bill with RIDERS that may AUTHORIZE GREATER REPRESSION against undocumented families. How many times have we seen this sneaky technique happen in the past? I am sure Senators Menendez & Kennedy may have noble intentions to help immigrants through the introduction of this bill. But we MUST SEE A COPY OF THIS BILL before endorsing it.

In order to raise support for the bill, we’ve drafted a sign-on letter that we hope you will disseminate far and wide. This bill would establish minimum standards of due process and treatment for U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and others who are swept up in raids and immigration enforcement operations. Since 2005 the Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has dramatically increased and intensified immigration raids – in worksites, homes, parks, streets, and communities nationwide. These raids have created terror in our homes, schools, and religious communities. Many immigration raids have been so sweeping and untargeted that they have ensnared U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Immigration agents have entered people’s homes during pre-dawn hours and have detained everyone living there including U.S. citizen children. ICE agents have descended on large work sites, shutting down operations, while detaining and interrogating all workers onsite including U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Workers arrested in ICE raids have been deprived access to immigration counsel. U.S. citizens have languished in immigration detention facilities across the country, and at least one U.S.-born citizen was deported to Mexico illegally. The bill affords vital due process provisions including access to counsel, humanitarian accommodations, improved detention standards, and promotes an “alternatives to immigration detention” program. Because the bill has not been introduced, we don’t yet have a bill number or title, but we’ll be sure to include that in our finalized version. We’re soliciting signatures from national, state, and local organizations (no individuals, please). State and local organizations should indicate the state and city in which they are located. The letter is attached, and the hard deadline to sign-on is 5 PM EST on Wednesday, Sept. 24th. We apologize for the short review period, but things are moving very quickly on Capitol Hill and it is vital that this letter be released in a timely manner. Again, thank you all so much for your hard work getting this bill introduced!
