Not all pet store dogs come from puppy mills but to many do, I know of two
that take the overstock from local breeders if they have unsold pups and new
liters on the way.

here is some owner's insight....
Chihuahua'a are
wonderful companions, loving, affectionate, intelligent,
amusing. My
Chihuahua Bubble has helped my girlfriend and I through some
really tough
times.
Chihuahua's need a lot of attention, this could be perceived as
needy, I
like to think they just adore being around you so much!
Most
small dogs can be yippy/bark a lot if they are not trained properly, or
they are over bred. My dog does hate to be alone, she much prefers the
company of people, or her doggy friends! Research, research, research!
Make
sure you know how much time you have to be prepared to give to a
Chihuahua
(as you should any dog), training can be tough, but if you stick
with it you
will have a good, healthy companion.
Chihuahua's don't need
too much grooming, but be prepared to cut nails
(weekly), brush
teeth(daily), and bathe (occasionally).
Your Chihuahua will want to go
everywhere with you so keep this in mind. Do
you want a dog with you all
the time?
Read lots of Chihuahua books.
If you decide to get your dog
from a breeder, be sure to carefully research
the breeder! If you get your
dog from a rescue society, consider that
although there are many dogs in
desperate need of homes, you don't know
their background - so prepare to
have more patience and consideration for
the life your dog may have had up
to now.
DON'T buy your dog from a pet store! That is the worst possible
step you can
take. If you buy from a pet store you are encouraging
reckless,
irresponsible breeding in puppy mills, see this link...
