> The AKC recognises only two distinctions in the Chi. The long
haired and the smooth coat. While there are many "deer faced" chi's
out there, they actually fall outside of breed standards. In my
oppinion, they are still chis, but you will find many who
disagree...including the AKC. Also, to be within AKC standards, a
chi must be 6 lbs or less. Again, this is a breed standard...not to
disparage our "big" chis. The one thing the AKC is adament about is
the use of such terms as "teacups", "toys", ect. The breed standard
is a long or smooth coat of 6 lbs or less....the use of these small
terms is only a selling gimick which I hope no one falls for. Of
course, just because your chi doesn't meet standards, doesn't mean
he isn't a chi, it just means these are the characteristics that
breeders should strive for and what is required for show. You can
see the specifics at www.akc.org It discusses all the
specifics...the gait, the coat, the tail, the face, the eyes, ect.
ALL colors are recognized. There has been recent discussion on
merles.....rather or not they should be accepted because it is
genetically impossible for a full blooded chi to be a merle due to a
gene that is missing in a chi but is present in a merle....I am not
sure I uddy that myself, but the debate is out there and the AKC
may, in the future, limit the registration of merle chis...other
than merle, all colors are recognized in chis
