Gracie, my previous Chi mix, went berserk whenever we left her at home alone. She shredded everything she came in contact with including our living room blinds. As much as it broke our hearts to do so, we finally purchased a large wire cage in which to keep her while we were out. She raised hell while in the cage and tore up everything around her, but for the most part, our problem was solved. Gracie died tragically 14 months later.
Our current Chi mix, Lacey, never put up a fuss when we left her at home. As soon as we saw how docile she acted while we were out, I dismantled and put away the cage. I guess it just depends on the individual dog as they all have their own personalities.
