I am not sure if you are referring to Cyndie's original post
or to my reply, but either way, I loved the post and appreciate it. Sometimes it
takes something sad to make us realize how important things are to us or to
encourage us to take extra time with our loved ones. This "letter" should make
us stop for a moment and think about things. For instance, how many times have
each of us at one point or another gotten upset with a pup for pottying in the
wrong place. Even the best of us have during a stressful point. How many of us
have maybe had an outside dog that we failed to give the attention to that it
deserved? The shelter story is reality. Too many animals are put to sleep each
year for just this reason, and it is our responsibility as "dog lovers" to use
this kind of thing to show that reality to people. I can understand if you are
depressed about it....but not offended by it.
I am grieving over Chip right now, and that sadness has
renewed in me a determination to spend more time with all my pets and make sure
each of them know they are loved. I have just finished re-arranging their
sleeping area to make it more of a family atmosphere. I am determined they will
no longer sleep in a small utility room. They deserve better. Chip deserved
better than my short attention giving as I hurried in and out of the
house!
Cyndie, I thank you for this post. Yes I cried. My daughter
refused to listen to the rest of it, and I choked up as I tried to read it to my
son, but still, it was something that needs to be passed because we must make
others realize that it is a reality. And that puppies and other animals DO FEEL
love and loss. The only people this should offend are those who have done just
what the letter speaks of. Being depressed is different from being offended. If
you have become depressed, that shows you care.

The first line nearly knocked me off my feet. I buried one
of my dogs a couple of hours ago. He wasn't a chi, just a mutt rescue found
when he was only 3 weeks old. As the runt of a very large litter, his momma
abandoned him to try to care for the larger healthier ones. We bottle fed
him till he was weaned, and he was such a great dog. I have been sitting
here crying my eyes out, and then the first line of this was a shocker. So
sad to think that, here I am crying over a "stray mutt" that left paw prints
on my heart, while some people have no problem at all with just abusing or
killing a dog that only loves them unconditionally.
Dear Mom and Dad,
| I died today. You got tired of me
and took me to the shelter. They were overcrowded and I drew
an unlucky number. I am in a black plastic bag in a landfill
now. Some other puppy will get the barely used leash you
left. My collar was dirty and too small, but the lady took it
off before she sent me to the great beyond.
Would I still be at home if I hadn't chewed your shoe?
I didn't know what it was, but it was leather, and it was on the
floor. I was just playing. You forgot to get puppy
toys.
Would I still be at home if I had been housebroken?
Rubbing my nose in what I did only made me ashamed that I had to go
at all. There are books and obedience teachers that would have
taught you how to teach me to go to the door.
Would I still be at home if I hadn't brought fleas into the
house? Without anti-flea medicine, I couldn't get them off of
me after you left me in the yard for days.
Would I still be at home if I hadn't barked? I was only
saying, "I'm scared, I'm lonely, I'm here! I want to be your
best friend."
Would I still be at home if I had made you happy?
Hitting me didn't make me learn how.
Would I still be at home if you had taken the time to care
for me and to teach manners to me? You didn't pay attention to
me after the first week or so, but I spent all my time waiting for
you to love me.
I died today.
