Kim, Your pup could be dreaming. I have a 4 yr old Chi, Boo Boo, and she dreams when she sleeps. She will twitch, whine, move her legs as if she is running and sometimes she will give a small-muted growl. She has some vivid dreams.
I would take your pup to the vet with a stool sample and let them check the pup.
