First, as you probably have figured out here....make sure you have a reputable breeder and the pup is old enough!!
Ok, that said, some usual things to be concerned with if you are new to the breed. First, the molera (sp)....This is normal for a chi, but like babies, can be a danger spot when young if they are not handled carefully. Two, chis are prone to 2 different medical conditions.....heart and hip. The heart problems can come relatively young and while not curable are generally treatable, but it is something you should have the vet to check on at each vet checkup. The hip displasia(sp) usually comes more middle to later years. I have found most do great on pain medication, but once it hits, if it does, be prepared to have your baby on daily pain medication. otherwise, chis are healthy alert and active dogs!! Expect a long term commitment 10-20 years! if properly cared for and no "unforeseen". Keep nutrical, corn syrup, or similar type product on hand for low sugar...especially while young. Also, invest in a good crate or carrier. This will be a life saver for housebreaking, and chis LOVE their little "dens". Also, a few soft sweaters. Get to know a good vet that you are comfortable with BEFORE you get your baby. IT will be good to have a relationship with a vet before an emergency arises. I wouldn't waste much money on a book unless you just like to read....there is a wealth of info available on the web and in forums such as this one. I applaud you for waiting till after the holidays to get your new baby. The holiday stress is just to much on a little chi in a new home. This info is all general, but if you have any specific questions, please ask....I am sure one of us Chi fanatics here will be able to help!! :-) Marsha > > pursepoor <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hello everyone, > > > > My husband and I are looking to get a chi after the holidays (so I > can > > take some time off to spend with the pup and not put it through the > > hustle and bustle of our holidays this year). > > > > I was wondering if you guys could give me ideas/hints on things I > will > > need for the puppy?
