As a training method, you can put pennies in a small can to rattle when a pup is misbehaving. The startling sound not only temporarily distracts them from the behavior, but they learn to associate that "scary, displeasing" sound with bad behavior. It is sorta like a poor man's version of the clicker training method.

I have on occasion had to use a rolled up newspaper and give a swat, but not as a training method...only when one of them is doing something they already know better than to do and are ignoring my commands to stop. For training, try to use a spray bottle or pennies in a can.

Now, I will admit that my larger chi (7 pounds) has gotten a open handed swat on the hiney a few times, but it is different with him, he is a trained hearing dog and he definitely KNOWS what he should and should not do, but sometimes like to slip into pet mode when around the other chis. I don't mind his playing, ect, but when he disobeys a command, as a service animal, it is a bit more serious that just a pet not minding. And he is big enough to handle a swat.

Subject: [Chihuahuas] I Need Help!

My baby Carmela has been acting up lately. For the last couple of nights she has been sleeping with me. (She was sleeping in her crate) Well last nite she decided to whine all night because I put her in her crate and closed the door. ( She does okay with the door open but she likes to jump on the bed and get into things.) She would go to sleep and than wake up and whine and try to get out. She has never done this before and she will go in her crate by herself from time to time.
The second problem we are having is when someone is eating she wants to get all over them and try to get some food. She eats her food but one night she jumped all over me trying to get some food I had. I do not want to start feeding her human food.
The last problem we are having is that she does not want to listen to me lately. I will tell her to stop and she will just look at me. My boyfriend believes that we should use physical punishment but as I have read that is not the best option.
Can someone please help! I am going out of my mind.
