Hello! If you have seen me on here before, you are aware that I am
also trying to potty train a chihuahua. I have however successfuly
housebroken a miniature schnauzer and a german shepard. What i did
with them was take them to the front door on a leash, put the dog in
the sit position, and then let them outside. So after being trained
within 2wks or so,the dog would run to the door and sit and stare at
me untill I noticed "OH shes trying to tell me she has to go
outside. It wasn't untill I got my last dog, a chi-poodle mix,that I
used the pads. By the time she was a yr she was fully weewee pad
trained. I decided to train her to go outdoors. She did good, eccept
she would have accidents because she didn't know how to tell me she
had to go. I thought this time with the new puppy, training would be
a lot easier if i started training her outside from day 1,and never
use weewee pads. I was in target yesterday looking at cute doggie
stuff, and came across book,a handbook on toy breeds. I'm not sure if
this is where I recieved this valuable info(cuz I ddin't buy it),or
from the chihuahua handbook I read also lastnight. Well, I have been
carrying my puppy outside everytime to go potty every 1-2hours. She
hasn't had any accidents. I also did this with the mix breed dog,who
never outside trained(she ran away 6months ago) . In the info I
read it said take the dog to the door on a leash everytime, and walk
with her outside to the potty area. Stay with her,and walk with her
back inside. And of course use rewards. It stated that a lot of toy
breed owners carry their dogs outside and the dog never learns how
to signal it has to go. So starting lastnight, I have been putting
her on the leash(she wears a body halter,not a collar yet)and trying
to encourage her to walk To the door. In the middle of the night I
carry her out, bcus she is only 1lb and has to go so bad, walking to
the door can't waite. Today it's been raining hard. Shes been with
us 1week,is only 8wks old,and is nto trained yet. today she ran back
to the door after being taken outside. Moreso to get out of the
rain. She tried going peepee inside right after I put her down on
the carpet. Thats when I took her back outside. Twice she tried
running back to the front door. Everytime I simply picked her up(she
wasn't on a leash that time, cus I had to rush her outside from
almost having the accident)and palced her back on the grass. We both
got wet,she didn't like it,but she DID go!! :) She will be walked
to the door & out on a leash rain or shine, and Im sure she will
eventualy learn. I don't know how long it will take using this
method on a chihuahua. It took my mini-schnauzer 2-3wks,before she
was running to the door to signal. But with our other dog who was
papertrained, and ran away, and now ouyr first fullblooded chihuahua,I
dont know if it will be different with a different breed. Christrine
