Hello. Yes, my chihuahua Dina used to be like that and she just grew out of it about 3 weeks ago! Dina is growing now and she's almost a year old (she's 10 months right now) and she is becomming more responsible for her actions. My chihuaha sleeps in her kennel at night and whenever it was time to put her back in her kennel she would run off wherever she could go, and I would have to chase her and force her inside her kennel. And just 3 weeks ago I was very surprised because I fed her and gave her water, then she went potty (daily routines) and when she finished eating she went inside her kennel by herself! I didn't tell her to go in, and I didn't have to force her inside it. I was like WOW!  I think that since she's growing up she's becomming more mature, and she remembered her daily routines because she probably got so used to them that she knew how to do it all by herself. I'm proud of her! From that day on all I saw is, "Dina, In!" and she'll go inside her kennel.

This is very common specially if he's older than 7 months and possibly 5 months, if he's used to being only by you this is why he's acting this way. If your puppy was with you all the time and rarely saw or was petted by strangers when he was at a very small age, he is probably just used to being a dog that only sticks to eather himself or with only you.

This makes perfect sense.  I have a 6 month old Chihuahua that I acquired about 3 weeks ago.  He was with the breeder and doesn't seem to have been exposed to many "outside" people.  In fact, I don't think he's ever been out of the house.  While he's shown some improvement since we first got him, he still barks, even tries to bite anyone that comes into the house if he's down on  the floor.  He's fine if you are holding him though.  I too hope to stop this behavior.

The other thing he does is whine and howl if left in another room alone.  Since he's still a puppy, I don't trust him to roam freely through the house.

Does anyone else have this problem?  Is this a Chihuahua thing?
