Hi Lin, Our new little guy Jose is shy like Sparky, not as much but but still a lot more then I care for. I think you are on the right track. Just keep not forcing yourself on her. Use night time to cuddle her and fuss over her while she cuddles up to you, pat, rub and kiss all she will allow, but not so much that she slinks away.
When your on the bed during the day, keep a special blanket there for her to get under (may take a while to convince her to get under it) but once she does you will probably be able to reach under there and pat her. Time and earning her trust will work this out. I mentioned in a earlier post that we got a blue and gold McCaw that was abused through a woman at the avian protection league. It took 8 months before he would step onto my husbands arm and a lot longer for me. (He was abused the worse by a woman) I've also had dogs that were abused that took a long time before they trusted. The slinking, tail between legs and creeping on the floor and running away are all signs of fear, weither they come natural or from abuse doesn't matter, the treatment remains the same. One other little trick that might help a little is to delay meals and let her get hungry enough that a treat is really really really tempting, but if she hasn't come for it in a hour then put it away, and feed her, and try again later.
