I have actually considered doing a grant proposal for state funds to open a
shelter. Biggest problem is that, when state funds are used, I THINK there is a
euthanasia requirement after a period (I am not sure though). Biggest
oppstical...even though I am an attorney, I don't have a clue how to write grant
proposals! lol. Our county is pretty pathetic when it comes to finances. Even
now, the state is threatening to take over our public school system because they
operate in the red. I would love to do something like this, I just don't have a
clue how to get started. I have also considered going to our reps to enforce the
shelter requirements, but with the political climate in our county and my having
to live and work here, it would be career suicide to make the wrong people
mad.

Connie and Marilyn already posted the first 2 things
that came into my head.
I know you're quite busy, but maybe if the dog is
hanging around for the day like the red bone did you could quick search red
bone rescue on the web. Maybe, for one of the ten different types
of dogs that show up, there would be a rescue near you where someone would
come get the dog. Just a thought.
And like Marilyn said. Since by law your county
is supposed to have a shelter. Maybe your county would temporarily
appoint your place as THE shelter. I know you're not into this kind of
thing for money, but maybe the county would pay to put up a nice fenced area
and a great shelter/dog house type area, so you could keep a stray or two
or three until you could place them with a rescue or whatever. I know
you are a busy person. I'm just throwing any thoughts out there.
Sheesh..but the problem with this is if your place was the shelter people
would probably just be dumping more dogs at your home. =\
