Hi Betty   Yes, you really want to avoid using steroids if you can.  Of course, you don't want your dog itching though either.  I wouldn't want to be itchy!  Years and years ago I had a Lab with a skin condition and she was put on steroids.  Ok, this was so many years ago my parents were in charge of my dog's vet care (I was a kid) and I don't know if the damage from steroids was well known then  or if the dosages were kept low, etc.   Her skin condition was quite bad though and so was her itching without the steroids.    My dog did eventually fail from the steroid use and have to be put to sleep.    Just like with a person, there are ways to try to figure out the allergen yourself.  Something in his food, a shampoo, something used on carpet, it could even be a hand lotion it's "person" uses.  Think hard about it and eliminate one thing for a couple weeks at a time and see if you can figure out the culprit.  There is allergy testing for dogs, too.  I think it's pretty much the same as the people allergy testing.  It may be pricey, it may not be, I don't know.  It is so great that vet medicine now has lots of what used to be people testing and surgeries for our pets.  Here is a link that has a little about allergy testing for dogs.  Good luck and let us know what happens,   Allergy Testing in Dogs - PetPlace.com   Katie " Lets talk about our wonderful little friends!
