What you're describing may be what I call the "Chihuahua honk". It sounds
like sort of like your little one is struggling to breathe - a mixture of cough
and wheeze that goes on and on, especially when the Chi is excited. This is
something that happens to Chis and it's normal. My vet says that some Chis do it
and some don't. I have 4 little ones and only 2 of the four do this. The
strangling cough is caused by the tightening of muscles in the Chi's throat.
I've found that the best way to deal with it is to hold the Chi on your lap and
massage his/her throat until the muscles relax. Try to keep your Chi from
breathing through his/her mouth. Forcing them to nose-breathe makes the episode
short lived. The Chihuahua cough is not life threatening, it's just something
that belongs to the breed.
It's always best to consult with your vet. I have 2 elder Chis and they
have little hacking coughs that is caused by their heart conditions. Both are on
medication.
