I am a breeder and I use the AKC. The reason there has been a decline in
AKC pups is because the price to register a litter AKC is a lot more than the
price to register with one of the other groups and more and more people are
becoming unwilling to pay the additional cost for an AKC pup. Since people are
just as happy with another registry as they are with AKC, more and more breeders
are ceasing to register the litters AKC so they can sell the pups cheaper.

What I'm finding in my Chi search - there are fewer and
fewer AKC breeders. I'm not sure if it's because they are getting around some
of the newer AKC rules or what. But many of the breeders I've spoken to
say both parents are AKC registered - but puppies are not. They use the APRI
or ?? registries that to me - what's the point? Talking to other people
- they think when they buy a "registered" dog - they assume it's the AKC
registry and that is not the case anymore. It's kind of deceiving to
me.
If you are a breeder and use any of the newer registries instead of
AKC, let me know why! I'm curious!

I know what you're saying here. I'm not sure
how long that rule on puppy sires being too young has been in place
though. Yep, AKC could make a huge dent in the puppy mill industry if
they would make even a bit more of an effort. grrrrrrrrr
(don't get me started on that. The posts in here would get pretty
unpleasant=) )
