But how old is Sophie? I don't crate my chis now, but I referring to a new puppy....until they get mature enough to have a little common sense, lol. Puppies, like toddlers, are in to everything! I did crate mine when they were pups and although the door of the crate is off now, they still like to go there.

But in the end, the only way any person or chi is ever going to be happy is if they follow their OWN instincts. Even if there are a ton of experts telling you that you are wrong, if something works best for you, then it is best for you. JMO

Of course you have to decide what you think is best, but as a chi owner for nearly 20 years, I would strongly recommend you reconsider the crate.

On crating or leaving them in a small safe area:

Marsha has been in the group longer than I have and has eons more chi experience.  I don't crate though.  I like it that way.  I'm home most of the time though.  When I leave, my chi Sophie goes to a small safe room with a litter box, food and water =)  There are some pluses to having crate trained, but do what you choose to do (as Marsha stated)
