Hello, I have heard of the hot water bottle idea, I have also heard
you can wrap a clock in a blanket and the ticking noise may help
remind her of the mothers heartbeat. I used a cheap one I got at a
dollar store when I was taking care of a 5 wk jack russell puppy.  
Sorry I don't know about the howling and crying :(
