Gordie may have associated going out of the door with being separated from you. If she is truly traumatized, it is gonna take a while to get past it. Make sure you stay with her when she goes out. Make some time for going out for reasons other than just to potty. Go outside and play with her in the yard or give her some treats outside. Stuff to make her associate going outside with something good. Try to make sure you stay right with her so she doesn't fear she has been left again. It could be fearful if she looks up and suddenly you are gone again, even if you just stepped around a tree or something. Do whatever you have to to make "outside" a positive place.

Subject: {SPAMFILTER} [Chihuahuas] Hard time with potty'ing outside now

Ever since Gordie went to the vet and was spayed, she has not wanted to potty outside anymore.  It is really getting frustrating.  I mean, I guess I should be happy that if she HAS to go inside, at least she is using a potty pad, but I would really like for her to go outside, and only use the pad in case of when I cant be here to take her out, like she was doing before.  Before, the pad would last a few days, because she would go outside before I left for school, and then go outside again when I got home.  But now she refuses to go outside at all, and I am going through 2 pads a day.

She has never been confined to a crate, so she wouldn't know what I was putting her in there for if I started that now.  She has always had free roam of the house, and I really dont feel comfortable leaving her in a crate while I am gone for several hours anyway.

She is just now getting over the "please dont leave me routine" since the vet, and the crying all day while I am gone like she used to.  I mean, she is doing really well on some areas, but she has really backslidden on this one and I would like to get her back to what it used to be.  I know that once it starts getting cold she isn't going to want to go out, and she also HATES walking on wet grass, so I fear that winter time is going to break her from pottying outside at all...

Help...

Hugs
Deb and Gordie
