You did the right thing by trying to keep your dog restrained.  I too  live 
in the Country on a farm.  We restrain our dogs if they are  runners.  If you 
did not, your dog would have died much sooner and  perhaps could have caused an 
accident and killed someone.  You did the  right thing.  It is our obligation 
to restrain our dogs.  It is the  law too in, I believe, all States.
