I think its great to sleep with your pup but I also value the crate training. I only let my guy start sleeping with me after a few weeks but put him in the crate in the early days when it was time for bed. He did fuss but it finally let up (its hard to ignore) and he grew to love the crate. I kept it near my computer with the door open and he would go in and out of it all day. Only at night or when I left him for brief stints did I close it. I think there is a value to it being "their place" to retreat to. I cannot imagine (after a year) a night without my boy sleeping in the bed with me but I am glad he learned to accept the crate. May sound crazy but I think it built confidence. Some guy on here wrote a long time ago how his dogs earned the privledge to sleep with him after a certain amount training. He said it better than that, but either way it made sense. I just worry how that giving in to him is "training you" (I say that as a victim of it myself) Enjoy your baby, good for him that he waited for the paper to potty on in the a.m.! Make sure he can't fall off. lov michelle and henry -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [email protected] Sent: Thu, 18 Jan 2007 8:38 AM Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas] Sleeping with a friend
Well, after much "to-do" last night, Max and I finally came to a compromise. He didn't want to do that crate no matter what and cried and cried for a very long time...becoming frantic. It just wasn't worth it to me. Finally he slept in bed with me, perched on my sholder, and that is where he stayed all night. We all slept well and he didn't potty until I got him up and on the newspaper! He is such a good dog! So I had my chocolate lab on the floor next to me, my daschund at my feet, little Max on my sholder and my hubby at my side! who could ask for anything more? I do appreciate all the suggestions I have gotten and will continue to try them. I do want Max to get used to the crate, if not for at night, then at least for sometimes during the day...as he is too little to just run around unsupervised. I sleep on a queen sized bed with Pablo, my chi, Tobi, my cat (she likes to sleep under the covers with Pablo), my husband, and about 3 other cats who hop on and off the entire night. Pita sleeps in a little bed in a chair next to my bed. I push up it to the side of the bed so she can climb out onto my bed and go under the covers. I don't care what professional dog handlers say, I am not one, so I can sleep with my family. I prefer it that way.
