When you have the carpet replaced be sure to tell the people doing it that an animal has urinated on it. Once it and the padding are removed, they will go over the base floor with a special solution to remove any traces of urine.

They will always smell it if it has been there for a while. I have found that a small dog like chi's and other puppies do better if they are on a potty schedule. It can be a pain but so worth it. But, seriously the carpet is a lost cause because if the pee has been there for a while, or they pee there all the time then it is probably in the padding underneath the carpet also. We went through this years ago with another animal. I live in an apartment and during the day while I'm gone I keep them in the kitchen with potty pads and they go on those. And they go to the bathroom when I take them outside. When I'm at home, I put pee pads on the carpet and they go on those 60% of the time. But my carpet is ruined from 6 months worth of them peeing on it, so the scent is stuck in the carpet. I don't know if I'll ever get them potty trained! Any suggestions?
