If people top post, then the downloaded older messages can be re-read or ignored and the top posted reply read in the message window. I switched to digest on the other list, that usually means I won't be posting and more than likely won't be reading, that's because I so detest digest format. The fact is that I do like to know the original post is beneath the current post. I may rarely go to the older post, but I want to know it is there if I need to refresh memory and I prefer it in its entirety to a lopped off line or two that may not really reveal the original post's intent.
