The "blockage" thing is rather specific to rawhide. If you watch them work on a big piece, you'll see them chew it until it can become a very soft, long, white gooey rope of rawhide. This string may be rather long, perhaps 6 or 8 inches, but even though it is soft and gooey, it is very very strong, try to tear it and you can't. If they swallow this long soft and delicious (to them) rope, it can bind in the intestines and cause very serious, possibly deadly, problems. It is similar to the problems with swallowing tinsel at Christmas.
