Does the merle gene have problems or were you just using this as an example?

I know a couple of life-long (literally) Chihuahua
breeders that flat out disagree with the AKC that merle is a natural
coloration in the chihuahua. That the gene had to be introduced from
another breed because it had not appeared in ANY chihuahua stock
until recent years. Thus, if you buy this argument, then even the
AKC is registering non-purebred dogs and perhaps allowing the
propogation of other problems that are carried with the merle gene.
