The merle gene doesn't have any problems unless you breed merle to  merle.  
If you breed merle to merle, you can have small eyes, no eyes, and  vision 
problems.  You should NEVER breed merle to merle.  Other than  that, breeding 
merle to non-merle is as safe as breeding any two  non-merles.
