Personally, I would never use them.  Barking is part of their 
communication and personality.  I bet though it's more like whining 
and howling when you are gone.  My two chis let me know they are ready 
for breakfast by howling to wake me up.  I'm still house training them 
so they sleep in their crate at night.  I never knew such vocals could 
come out of something so small.  

Maybe you should try fostering a dog, like someone suggested.  And 
this is a great time to start training your chi.  Or try getting 
another chi puppy.  I know if for some reason I have Belle in a 
different room of our house without Pita, Pita will run around whining 
looking for Belle.  And vice versa, Belle will do the same.  They are 
partners in crime.
