Sheila:  The way it was explained in our class was that either method works and 
some dogs are just plain afraid of the clicker, however, you can click faster 
then you can vocalize a 'yes'...and therefore, you are always re-enforcing the 
positive behavior as soon as it is performed.  Sometimes the dog will already 
be performing an additional behavior when the 'yes' comes out. 
As far as collars, all small dogs should be trained, in my opinion, in a 
harness because they can suffer from a collapsed trachea from pulling on a 
collar.  Our trainer insisted small dogs were placed in a harness.  Collars 
were only used for ID tag purposes only.  The first class is usually longer 
because they have to go through proper paperwork (shot records, etc) during the 
first class.  Hope this helps.
