I live in the desert southwest. I just don't bring my dogs in the car if they
can't get out with me. Every dog I have ever had loves to ride, but leaving
them in the car would kill them very quickly. It is something that is a firm
"No", the same as if they wanted to play in traffic.

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Taking the babies for a ride in the car...

  hi everyone!

i adopted my 9 yr-old chi around christmas, and she adapted very
quickly to being in my home. she loves coming with me everywhere i
go - sometimes i feel guilty about having to go to work everyday
lol. since she's home for about 6 hours alone, i bring her with me
when i need to run errands. she loves riding in the car! i hadn't
thought about the dangers of riding with a dog in the car until we
had a 57 degree day recently, which isn't hot, but the sun was
blazing! so, while it was nippy outside, the car was steaming.
when we got in i rolled down the windows so she could get air...but
the sun shone into the car right onto the passenger seat, which is
where she loves to sit. i pulled over and placed her in the
backseat since there seemed to less sunbeam there...but, being the
stubborn old lady that she is, she jumped right back up to the front
as soon as i pulled off again.

she got so hot that she started panting and sweating as though we
had just walked several blocks at top speed on a 90 degree day! the
short end of it is that i'm worried for the summertime...i had
simply planned on turning on the A/C when we went for rides, but it
seems sunlight, not lack of air, is the issue. has anyone else
experienced this? what did you do? i thought of putting shades on
the window, but i'm not too sure how effective that would be. i
know the easy answer would be to keep her out of the car, and
obviously i will when it can be avoided...but i often take road
trips and bring her along, and am nervous about spring/summer...when
it finally arrives on the East Coast in full swing.

thanks a lot for any suggestions!
