Hi,
My two are potty trained with one exception for Bessie - LOL! Bessie has
NO body fat - she's under three pounds, so in the winter, she can't have the
run of the house, even with coats on, she just can't handle the cold, and
given the choice of going outside or going in the house - she'll choose the
house - LOL! So, in the winter, we have to use the x-pen around the doggie
door when we are not home, and then we use a baby gate (wall mounted with a
swing door) too keep the pooches in the family room and kitchen where we can
keep an eye on them. Elsa, never, ever goes in the house.
This is how we potty trained them though -
When the were little babies, we used a packnplay baby play yard and put in
it, their bed, food, water, toys and a litter box when we were at work and
at night. And took them outside to potty frequently when we were home with
another litter box nearby at all times in the house. This worked really
well - they learned how to use the litter box themselves when we were at
work :o).
When they got a little older, we switched to the x-pen making a nice sized
area, with their food, bed, toybasket, water, and a small area to play, and
of course the dog door so they can go in and out whenever they want to. In
the summer, they can have the run of the house when we are home. In the
winter it's just the kitchen and the family room - but that is where we
spend most of our time anyway. And if our 2 1/2 year old is bugging them
too much, I'll put them in their xpen for a while until he forgets about
bugging them. Mostly, Elsa will drive him off by licking his face a ton if
he's bugging her though. Bessie will keep away pretty effectively or go
outside if he's bugging her.
The only time we had accidents in the house was after we got wood floors
and my hubby was like - they can have the run of the house in winter now too
because they haven't had an accident in so long - I told him it wasn't a
good idea, that Boo would go on the throw rugs, but he didn't think so.
Sure enough, she ruined a $400 rug by the end of the winter - it's now on
our patio - and we have another just like it in the living room - LOL!

Ok, I noticed Karri said her dog house trained easily, and it only
took a month...What is the average length of time it takes to
houstrain a chihuahua? I'm SOOOO unexperienced with little dogs. I
have 3 pit bulls (got a new one today)...My boy Cheif, only took 1 day
to house train (he's wonderful), and really it was only one little
mess, then he figured out "better not potty in the house". Lucy, my 8
mo. old female took a week to house train. And the new one I got
today, hasn't had an accident YET and she's been inside all day
(except for when i've taken her out). I know chihuahua's are WAY
smaller than pit bulls....do they have to go outside more often? I
know a pit puppy thats about chihuahua sized has to go out about every
2 hrs...do Chi's have to go every 2 hrs???? in that case I would HAVE
to get a litter box. My husband has had little dogs all of his life,
so he'd know how to take care of it. We had a talk with our kids, and
told them to pretend the new pit was a little tiny dog...they did
really good! I was supprised, we'll see how long it lasts tho. I've
noticed tho, Chi's are like Pit Bulls, if they're not handled
correctly, theres alot that can go wrong.
